Year 3

Spring term 1

Reading

We will be reading “Around The World In Eighty Days” by Jules Verne.  We are going to use “echo reading” to encourage the children to consider their use of expression when they read. Children will also practise retrieval and prediction skills and consider the development of characters throughout a narrative

To help your child at home, please continue to encourage them to read daily and record their progress in their planners for the teachers to see.

Writing

During each half-term, the children will produce one piece of fiction and one piece of non-fiction writing. Throughout these learning journeys, they will acquire new skills, practise their application and develop extended pieces of writing.

The first piece of writing that children will complete is a speech narrative inspired by “Around The World In Eighty Days”. Our learning will include the use of speech marks for direct speech, the use of adverbs and adverbials and how ideas can be sequenced logically to form paragraphs.

Our second piece of writing is a leaflet to persuade. As well as learning to use persuasive phrases, we will be revisiting the use of subordinating conjunctions and subheadings.

Maths

During the first-half term, learning will focus firstly on subtraction, working towards subtracting a three-digit number from a three-digit number, exchanging where needed.

After that, the children will learn about division, learning to use multiplication facts to recall division facts and using concrete resources, pictorial representations, bar models and part-whole models to aid calculation.

Science

During this half-term, children will complete a physics unit on forces.  They will learn what a force is, what friction is and the effect friction has on a moving object.  There will also be an opportunity to revisit learning about magnetic force.

History

This half-term, children will continue learning about Britain from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age.  Our learning this half term will focus on the Bronze Age.

Geography

In Geography, the children are diving into the fascinating world of the water cycle! From evaporation and condensation to precipitation and collection, our young learners are discovering how water moves and transforms in nature.

Languages

In Spanish this half-term, children will be learning to name colours.

Computing

In Computing the children are learning to create branching databases. By using specialised software, our learners are developing the skills to organise and manage information efficiently.

RSHE

The children are learning about staying Keeping Safe.

RE

In RE this half-term, they children will learn about the Hindu celebration of Holi and how Hindus celebrate good overcoming evil. To immerse themselves in this Hindu tradition, the children will participate in their very own Holi celebration.

PE

This half-term, we will be teaching the Real PE scheme to complete Real PE and Real Dance units.  We will focus on the cognitive cog; teaching the children ways to identify how a performance can be improved.
