Spring 1 

During the Spring 2 term, Year 5 pupils will continue to build on their knowledge and skills through a rich and engaging curriculum.

English

In writing, pupils will retell a scene from 'Macbeth' by Shakespeare. Children will focus on engaging the reader through the use of descriptive language and the use of tension and suspense to create an atmosphere of their choice in their scene.

In Reading, pupils will also study 'Macbeth'. They will develop key comprehension skills, including prediction, inference, and retrieval, while exploring themes, characters, and the author’s use of language.

Maths

In Maths, children will learn to identify properties of 2D and 3D shapes, applying these skills in a range of problem-solving contexts. They will then deepen their understanding of fractions, through ordering and comparing fractions by size, converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and simplifying fractions. Finally, children will develop their understanding of time and the significance of the role of maths within time. This will include applying the use of time telling within real-world concepts, and distinguishing between digital and analogue time-telling.

Science

In Science, pupils will explore space, investigating the planets within our solar system, the composition and structure of these planets, and the differences in daily and yearly cycles based on mass, rotation and orbit.

Geography

In Geography, children will study human geography, with a focus on trade within South America. They will learn which goods are grown and traded, how the climate and trade routes effect trading, and the impact trade has on people and the environment.

Religious Education

In R.E., pupils will explore the concept of suffering, considering the key question –' Is it important for Christians to recognise that Jesus suffered before and after his deaths?

Music

In Music, children will develop their understanding of the composition and musical elements of rap, identifying key elements such as lyrics, structure and rhythm to then create and refine their own pieces of music.

History

In History, pupils will study the life of the ancient Greeks, and how the achievements of this society have impacted modern society globally.

Art

In Art, children will continue to explore Pop Art, using artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein as inspiration. They will develop their appreciation of the style while creating bold and expressive artwork of their own.
