Spring 1
During the Spring 1 term, Year 5 pupils will continue to build on their knowledge and skills through a rich and engaging curriculum.
English
In Writing, pupils will develop an adventure story opening inspired by the class novel Who Let the Gods Out? by Maz Evans. Children will focus on engaging the reader through descriptive language, effective openings, character development, and the use of tension and suspense.
In Reading, pupils will study Who Let the Gods Out? by Maz Evans. They will develop key comprehension skills, including prediction, inference, and retrieval, while exploring themes, characters, and the author’s use of language.
Maths
In Maths, children will learn to calculate area, perimeter, and volume, applying these skills in a range of problem-solving contexts. They will then deepen their understanding of multiplication, including multiples, factors, and prime numbers, alongside the use of the formal column multiplication method.
Science
In Science, pupils will explore forces, investigating how they act, the effects they have, and their importance in everyday life.
Geography
In Geography, children will study volcanoes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters, with a focus on South America. They will learn about where these events occur, why they happen, and their impact on people and the environment.
Religious Education
In R.E., pupils will explore the concept of God across different religions, developing understanding of similarities and differences in beliefs and how faith influences people’s lives.
Music
In Music, children will develop their composition skills, using elements such as melody, structure, texture, and rhythm to create and refine their own pieces of music.
History
In History, pupils will study modern crime and punishment, linking this learning to their previous understanding of crime and punishment in the past and exploring how approaches have changed over time.
Art
In Art, children will explore Pop Art, using artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein as inspiration. They will develop their appreciation of the style while creating bold and expressive artwork of their own.
